PROJECT // Residence, Cornwall, NY
Cornwall, NY

Located on a narrow, wooded lakefront lot, the site was challenging due to the large setbacks, view to the west and the changing contours. Due to the tapering of the site toward the lake, a variance was needed to allow for the construction of the house on a natural rise toward the lake. As all of the views were toward the west, the house was designed in a modified open plan with rooms looking thru one another on the first floor to take advantage of those views. A recessed deck and sitting area at the second floor landing allow for light and access to the view. The house allows for a variety of outdoor living areas ranging from covered to open for outdoor living in all types of weather.

The primary focus of the house is the kitchen, great room and dining room which function as the primary gathering spaces for the family. Glimpses of the view from these spaces are visible from the entry hall, stairwell and the library inviting one to the heart of the home. Towards the street front are the service spaces of garage, library and laundry. The garage is designed to accommodate three cars. A service area below the third car is accessible from the basement.

Of primary importance in the design of the house was the desire for openness and connection between spaces while still providing a sense of privacy and retreat. Trees were selectively cut to allow for a focused view to the lake thus contributing to the sense of having ones own private lake in the midst of other vacation and full time homes. The desired image was one which blends into the woodland atmosphere and promotes a sense of peace and connection to the natural environment.
