PROJECT // Enviromental Learning Center, Redden State Forest
LOCATION
Ellendale, Delaware

DESIGN SOLUTION
Rather than being viewed as a deteriorating liability, the carriage house was adapted for the learning center fulfilling the mission of the forest service of providing an educational experience in a naturalistic setting. In addition to providing stabilization of the structure and restoration of certain key architectural elements the design scheme took advantage of the original stalls to create exhibit alcoves each with a specific theme representing the building blocks of forest life and how forest products contribute to the region's growth and development. On the north side of the display area, large vehicle access doors were removed and replaced with a centered single door with flanking windows as per an archive photograph. The exterior was also re-shingled with cypress shingles as there was severe deterioration to the original shingles.

The cypress t&g interior walls were carefully removed, cleaned and stored while the wiring, plumbing and insulation was completed in the perimeter walls. Due to the deterioration of many boards re-installation was limited to selected areas. A new brick paver floor reminiscent of the previously removed original floor was installed in the display area. New stall partitions were made to match the lone remaining partition. The conference area features a new storefront with a double-acting door to allow for securing the restored barn doors as well as climate control. Work also included all new mechanical, electrical and plumbing.
